If you are looking for the speakeasy that is theatrical, delicious, and a roaring good time, try your luck at finding Art of Duplicity in Cape Town, South Africa. This hidden gem is more than a bar, but a true vintage experience!
We are sworn to secrecy and not allowed to disclose the location, but by making a reservation you’ll be sent clues for how to find this elusive drinking den. Charlie has very strict rules, so make sure you read through them before you go. And don’t forget the password once it’s given to you, they’ll ask more than once!
After one of the best entrances we’ve ever experienced, you walk into a prohibition themed warehouse bar with plush antique couches and shipping crates alike. The atmosphere is grungy but with an elegant flair: they blend the grit of true prohibition with the romanticized sophistication of Gatsby.
Not only did we enjoy a few cocktails, but their food menu is exciting as well! The libations menu (once you can find it) rotates with drinks from low alcohol content to lethally potent for preferences of all tastes. The light refreshing lift of the Smashing Basil was a perfect start followed by the intoxicating Miss Red the Wolf. All of the unique concoctions were made with flair and artistry!
Charlie may have had a lot of rules, but he was genuinely wonderful to talk to about the bar. Art of Duplicity has only been open 3 years and has already made the World’s Best 100 Bars list multiple years in a row. It is very rare for speakeasies to make this list and is very apparent why Art of Duplicity is on it when you visit.
If you’ve never thought of making the flight all the way to Cape Town before, here is your motivation. Plenty to experience in the day, and plenty of entertainment and libations at night at Art of Duplicity!
